How to Deal
with Spammers Forging Your Email Address
reprinted with
permission from
Modwest, (some features may not be available with other domain
hosts)Have you had
spammers send out email that looks like it is coming from you?
You have
probably gotten spam that identified your email name and/or email
address as the sender. Here are
some helpful tips from Modwest, a domain hosting site used by some of
our clients.
Disable "catch-all" email
addresses: If Modwest handles your email and you receive spam sent to an
email address at your domain that is not listed in your Modwest Onsite
control panel, then you may have setup a "catch-all" email address.
Disabling it will stop you from "catching-all" the spam sent to
these nonexistent email addresses.
Blacklist yourself: Yep,
that's what we said. If you receive spam email that appears to come from
your own email address, you can stop it by adding your email address to
the "Known Spammers" list in your
Modwest spam filter. NOTE: This is not a solution for those whose
email needs include emailing themselves.
Beef up your spam filter:
Email forged to come from your address without your permission will be
spam, so make sure your spam filter is on and set to an effective level.
Kill the messenger (at
least temporarily): If you are receiving tons of nondelivery and other
bounce notifications because undeliverable messages appear to come FROM
your address, you should temporarily put the sender of these bounce-back
messages (such as 'postmaster@*' or 'mailer-daemon@*') on your "Known
Spammers" list in your Junkmail or
Modwest spam filter. NOTE: This will prevent legitimate emails from
'postmaster@*' and 'mailer-daemon@*' from going to your inbox.
Call the (spam)cops: Spamcop works with internet service providers to cut spam off at its
source. You can report spam you receive at
spamcop.net
Granted: You may not be
able to do some of these steps exactly this way if you do not have a Modwest account, but these tips should give you an idea of how to deal
with spammers on your terms. While you are at it, be sure to Whitelist
